Along with the application, there is a testing process which involves a Written Test, Physical Ability Test (PAT), and Oral Boards. Please see the "Fire Fighter Testing" tab in the Employment section of our website for more details.

Once this information is released to Human Resources we begin the background process. This begins with contacting the candidates on our hiring list, by rank. The background process takes approximately 4 months and up to 6 months to process. We conduct our Academy’s usually in March. At this time, we only conduct one (1) academy a year.
When we are in a 'Testing Year' you will find our calendar on our website with dates and times that the PAT's will be conducted.
It is suggested that you pick out a couple of days and times (from our Testing Calendar) to bring with you to the Written Exam.
West Metro Fire accommodates the out-of-state applicants by giving them the Written Exam and PAT in the same weekend. If the out-of-state applicant wants to Re-test the PAT, this would be at the applicants discretion (the PAT Re-test is optional). If the applicant gets through the Written and the PAT and have been invited to Oral Boards, they will make one more trip for the oral interview.
If an out-of-state applicant is called to go to background, this individual will make approximately 4 trips prior to hire.
There are other local fire departments that offer volunteer opportunities.
Members that have attained their Paramedic certification prior to being hired by WMFR may choose this career track, and will be required to complete a West Metro administered Field Internship program, the length of which will be determined by the EMS Division.
Apprentices that choose the Paramedic Career Track will be allowed to also complete the necessary general education coursework required to obtain an Associate’s Degree in Para medicine if they so choose. All costs and time off necessary to meet this requirement will be the responsibility of the department, though no overtime compensation will be paid to the Apprentice for time spent in meeting these requirements.
College Education: The Apprentice will be required to attain an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science from a community college of the department’s choosing. The courses required to attain this degree will be taken in an on-line format if available, unless otherwise approved by the JATC.
If the Apprentice selects this career path and has attained an Associate’s degree in Fire Science prior to employment with WMFR, the degree will be recognized as having met the intent of this requirement, subject to review by the JATC.
If the Apprentice has any other college degree and selects this career path, they will be required to successfully complete three college level Fire Science courses. Specific courses will be determined by the JATC, and will be taken in an on-line format if available, unless otherwise approved by the JATC. All costs and time off necessary to meet this requirement will be the responsibility of the department, though no overtime compensation will be paid to the Apprentice for time spent in meeting these requirements.
1. Veterans points are 5 points Five points are added to the passing examination score or rating of a veteran who served: * During a war; or * During the period April 28, 1952 through July 1, 1955; or * For more than 180 consecutive days, other than for training, any part of which occurred after January 31, 1955, and before October 15, 1976; or * During the Gulf War from August 2, 1990, through January 2, 1992; or * For more than 180 consecutive days, other than for training, any part of which occurred during the period beginning September 11, 2001, and ending on the date prescribed by Presidential proclamation or by law as the last day of Operation Iraqi Freedom; or * In a campaign or expedition for which a campaign medal has been authorized. Any Armed Forces Expeditionary medal or campaign badge, including El Salvador, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, Southwest Asia, Somalia, and Haiti, qualifies for preference. A campaign medal holder or Gulf War veteran who originally enlisted after September 7, 1980, (or began active duty on or after October 14, 1982, and has not previously completed 24 months of continuous active duty) must have served continuously for 24 months or the full period called or ordered to active duty. The 24-month service requirement does not apply to 10-point preference eligibles separated for disability incurred or aggravated in the line of duty, or to veterans separated for hardship or other reasons under 10 U.S.C. 1171 or 1173. 2. Veterans can receive 10 points for Disability Preference : Ten points are added to the passing examination score or rating of: * A veteran who served at any time and has a present service-connected disability or is receiving compensation, disability retirement benefits, or pension from the military or the Department of Veterans Affairs but does not qualify as a CP or CPS; or * A veteran who received a Purple Heart.
You will need to complete the SF-15 Form to receive your 10 points
3. Veterans eligible for the Montgomery GI Bill Funds can qualify under West Metro’s Apprenticeship Program (JATC).

Please know that it does not have to reflect on your application that you are taking this class – if there is a spot for you to make this note, then by all means go ahead and state your plan. JUST KNOW, that you do not need to have your EMT-B to apply or go through the testing process, you will need this certification by date of hire.
We are only creating a hiring list that will be in effect for 2 years. The first academy from this hiring list that we are creating, would begin in March of 2012.
You do not need to be a state certified EMT-B to test with us. You only need to be state certified by date of hire.
Once you complete the academy you will receive paramedic pay in your biweekly paycheck. There is potential for advancement in pay for current paramedicine.
However, West Metro reserves the right to require all members to obtain paramedic certification based on District need.
