File of life
The File of Life is a program that encourages citizens to keep track of vital medical information, allowing emergency responders to access this information. The target audience for this program is senior adults. However, the "File of Life" is applicable for people of all ages, especially individuals with medical conditions and developmental disabilities. West Metro Fire Rescue supports the "File of Life" through its and programs for individuals with disabilities.
West Metro Fire's "File of Life" components include:
- A red magnetic "file" (small plastic case with a magnet on the back of it)
- A summary sheet of medical information
- A wallet-size "file" and information sheet
For a free file of life, contact Susan Saito at
303-989-4307 x537.
The "File of Life" encourages citizens to keep the "file" of information in a visible, obvious location in their homes. Possible locations include:
- On the outside of a refrigerator
- On a medicine cabinet
- On an interior residential metal door (the type found in an assisted living center)
A few things to remember when using the "File of Life":
- It is a good idea to record information in pencil. Updates and revisions may be necessary.
- The information is only useful if it is updated frequently. Participants are urged to maintain current information regarding medication and dosages.
- The "File of Life" has a spot for marking if the individual has a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) order. The "File of Life" is not a valid DNR. Participants are advised to record the location of the original DNR order. However, all current EMS protocols apply - DNR orders are only valid if they have original signatures or a confirmation from the authorizing doctor.
When promoting or distributing the "File of Life", please remember:
- Stress that citizens MUST keep this information up to date. They may want to make a few extra photocopies of the unmarked paperwork for future updates.
- They should include the location of DNR paperwork and hospital preferences, even though there is not a place on the form designated for hospital preference.
- Remind citizens that stickers are generally not recognized, since EMS personnel often see outdated information stickers that are misleading. EMS professionals will check the logical locations for medical information, regardless of a sticker.
